When & where to sail

When & where to sail

The two great charter seasons sit on opposite sides of the calendar. Here is where to be, and when — region by region, month by month.

Charter follows the sun. The Mediterranean comes alive from late spring through early autumn; the Caribbean takes over through the northern winter. Knowing the rhythm of each region — the winds, the water, the crowds and the rates — is the difference between a good week and an exceptional one. Use the filters below to find the right destination for your dates, or explore each region’s season in detail.

French Riviera

Glamour, anchorages and the summer social calendar

Best timeJune – September

The Côte d’Azur is the spiritual home of Mediterranean charter. From Saint-Tropez to Monaco, the coast pairs deep-water anchorages with the season’s most prestigious events. July and August bring reliable sunshine and warm water, but also the highest demand — the most sought-after yachts are booked months ahead. June and September reward those who plan: the same coastline, lighter crowds, and softer rates.

When to goBook June or September for the best balance of weather, value and availability. July–August for the social peak.
WindLight to moderate; occasional Mistral in early summer
SeaCalm, warm (23–26°C in peak)

Amalfi & Italy

Coastline, culture and the islands of the Tyrrhenian

Best timeJune – September

The Amalfi Coast, Capri, the Aeolian Islands and Sardinia’s Costa Smeralda form one of the richest cruising grounds in the Med. It rewards a yacht with range — mornings in a quiet cove, afternoons in Positano or Porto Cervo. High summer is hot and busy; late June and September offer the same beauty with more room to breathe and gentler conditions.

When to goLate June and September are ideal. August is the busiest and most expensive across all of Italy.
WindGenerally light, thermal afternoon breezes

Ibiza, Mallorca and Menorca’s turquoise calas

The Balearics offer the Med’s longest practical charter season and its most varied character — the energy of Ibiza, the calas and sailing waters of Mallorca, the quiet of Menorca. Short hops between islands make it forgiving and flexible. The water is among the clearest in the Med, and the season stretches comfortably from May into October.

When to goMay and October are underrated — warm, quiet, and well-priced. Peak energy is July–August.

Greece

The Cyclades, Ionian and thousands of islands

Best timeMay – October

Greece is the sailor’s Mediterranean — more islands than any charter could exhaust, from the wind-swept Cyclades to the gentle, green Ionian. The Meltemi wind shapes the summer in the Aegean, thrilling for those who want to sail, worth planning around for those who don’t. The season runs long and rates are often gentler than the western Med.

When to goJune and September for warmth without the strongest Meltemi. The Ionian is calmer all season.
WindMeltemi (strong N wind) in the Aegean, Jul–Aug; lighter in the Ionian
SeaClear; can be lively in the Cyclades

It has become one of the Med’s most popular charter regions for good reason: it’s easy, beautiful and reliably fine through the summer.

When to goJune and September offer warm seas and fewer crowds. July–August is peak and lively.

Best timeDecember – April

The winter season runs from December through April, peaking around the holidays when St. Barths becomes the centre of the yachting world. Steady trades make it some of the finest sailing anywhere.

When to goDecember holidays are the glamour peak. January–April offers superb sailing and better availability.

It’s ideal for relaxed charters and families, with the same warm winter trades as the wider Caribbean but calmer seas. The season mirrors the region: December through April is prime.

Unspoiled islands and the southern Caribbean

Best timeDecember – May

The Grenadines are the Caribbean at its most unspoiled — Tobago Cays, Mustique, Bequia — a string of islands south of the hurricane belt with a longer, quieter season. Fewer crowds, exceptional snorkelling and a more remote, authentic feel than the northern islands. The season stretches comfortably from December into May.

Yacht racing

The world of superyacht regattas

Beyond cruising lies one of the most rarefied corners of the sport — superyacht racing. Each season, some of the most beautiful and powerful sailing yachts in the world come together to race in a handful of celebrated regattas, set against the backdrop of the world’s finest harbours.

The season follows the sun much as charter does — the Mediterranean through the summer, the Caribbean in spring. Sailyachts follows this world closely, with first-hand coverage of the yachts and the occasions that define it.
